Wan Luan: The Missing Pillar

I.STORY

“The day has come to realize the prophecy of the Elder Gods and face the fate of this land given to us by Pan Gu.”. These are the words spoken by a visionary general. A general who vowed to reclaim what was his in the name of justice.

“Such inspiring words…” a wounded soldier spoke. “But words alone cannot win a battle; words alone cannot restore my honor!”

“Pull yourself together soldier” grunted the captain. “The enemy is still upon us! If you want to live, you WILL have to fight”. The territorial war raged on. Like cows to the slaughter, the Jade Armies’ ranks fell at the hands of the opposing clans. There was no glory to be had, not today.

“Retreat! If you value your lives…RUN!!” frantic footmen blurted out in fear. Arrows fly and bodies fell. The Jade Army was defeated.

The enemy general, basking in their glory shouted as he leads the charge “Is this it? Is THIS what the Jade Army is capable of?!” The day was theirs. Their victory was at hand.

Back the Jade Army camps; the air was filled with the stench of death. Beaten and bloodied bodies litter the ground. Cries of despair echo as wives mourn the sons and husbands that they will never see again. All asking one question:

“Where is our general? Where is Wan Luan?”

Days before the gruesome battle, the moonlight shines upon a somewhat uneasy night. One could hear the rustle of leaves and the tinkering of plates and hammers upon the furnace. The air was filled with the voices of men talking about death, about glory, and most of all …about victory. Drunken soldiers celebrating what could be their last sip of wine shout:

“Death to our enemies!”
“Victory to our revered general!”

Amidst all the commotion and warmongering, one man stood silent. Standing at his home’s terrace, he looked upon his blade, the very same blade that his father wielded.

For the first time in his life, Wan Luan felt the very thing he himself thought would never feel: Doubt.

“Revered…such folly. These commoners, they know not what they speak of. I am not revered; I could not even defend my own father…” Wan Luan said.

“You are our general, sire” said his captain. “We shall follow you to the very end”
Wan Luan said nothing. He knew it was not his place to feel doubt, not on the eve of his war.
“Captain, see to the army’s preparations for tomorrow” he ordered.

“Where will you be going my lord?” the captain asked. Wan Luan only answered: “To my father.”

Wan Luan rode to his father’s grave. What drove him to do so, only he knows. Perhaps he wanted solace, or forgiveness. Above all else, he was a son wanting to honor his late father. As he contemplated these things on his way to his father’s grave, a flash of light blew his steed away. The general came crashing to the ground, drawing his sword as he prepared to defend himself.

“Show yourself coward!” he shouted. His resolve was dampened when he saw his assailant.

“Come now, is that anyway to greet an old friend?” The shining figure spoke. “Such disrespect is unbecoming of you; o great general Wan Luan”

“YOU… why have you come?!” the general asked as he pointed his sword at the beast.

“Haven’t you forgotten our deal mortal? The Lady Fel Maiden grows impatient. Even I’ am starting to doubt your resolve?”

The shining figure spoke of the deal that was handed to the general back at the Shrine of Sunrise at the top of Lantern Mountain. “The army you spoke of right?” The general replied.

“Yes Wan Luan, although you have your precious Jade Army with you, they are nothing more than sheep, easily thrown into chaos if you eliminate the shepherd.”

“They are my soldiers, MY people. Their resolve is much more than my own.” The general replied with pride.

“Are they now?” The figure answered with an evil smirk. “Then why don’t I put them to the test? If they are the army you think they are, then they would be able to defeat any adversary; even without your leadership Jade general!”

With that, the shining beast flung his arm and 3 Purple dragons emerged behind Wan Luan. The dragons pounced at the general without warning. Wan Luan’s blade fell to the ground. The shining figure opened his hand and the blade jumped to his palm.

“Your father was a fool just as you are now.” The beast looked upon the Jade Army’s camp. “Let see what’s this army of yours is capable of, I’m sure it’ll be quite the show”

The figure and the dragons disappeared together with the general. The night grew silent once again.

Dawn. The sounds of drums signal the march of the Jade Army to the territorial wars. All were ready for the first of many battles of the illustrious army save for one. Wan Luan was nowhere to be found.
